NCFE Level 1/2 Technical Award in Child Development

Qualification Aims:

The NCFE Level 1/2 Technical Award in Child Development is designed to:

  • Focus on the study of child development and care.
  • Offer breadth and depth of study, incorporating a key core of knowledge.
  • Provide opportunities to acquire a number of practical and technical skills related to working with children.
  • Qualification Objectives:

    This qualification aims to:

  • Provide an understanding of child development from birth to early childhood.
  • Identify job roles within the early years and childcare sectors and the values that underpin professional practice.
  • Develop an understanding of legislation, policies, and procedures in early years settings and their importance for practitioners.
  • Promote an understanding of human development across the early years and how this influences care and education.
  • Identify children’s individual needs and understand how these are met through partnership working with other professionals.
  • Provide an understanding of the importance of play in a child’s development and learning.
  • Equip students with knowledge and skills that will prepare them for further study or employment in the childcare and early years sector.
  • Additional Learning Opportunities:

    Year 9 – Building Strong Foundations

  • A foundation term at the start of Year 9 to introduce key knowledge, skills, and understanding needed for the course.
  • Development of literacy and numeracy skills essential for future study and working in childcare and early years sectors.
  • Initial exploration of child development theories and practical skills.
  • Year 11 – Preparing for Future Steps

  • Focus on securing high grades by consolidating core knowledge.
  • Preparation for further study at Level 3 in Childcare or Health & Social Care.
  • Developing skills that will support progression into work or further education in childcare, early years, and related fields.
