CODSALL COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL ACADEMY

“Academic success and football achievement takes hard work, commitment and a growth mindset. It doesn’t happen by accident; it happens because we embrace the challenge of being better every day.

Independence, responsibility and accountability; these are the foundations of the life skills woven into the fabric of our course, on the pitch, in the classroom and within the wider community.

Expectations are high. If you want to achieve; if you want to develop; if you want to better yourself every day; then you belong here.

This is our culture, built and sustained over the last 15 years. This is the Codsall Football Academy way.”

Mr T Scott, Lead Teacher & Head of Codsall Football Academy

Launched in 2009, Codsall Community High School opened the first school based Football Academy in the UK.

Football Academy students follow the BTEC National Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development (equivalent to 3 A-Levels).

The two-year course for 16-19 year olds, boys and girls, is part of our Sixth Form and provides students with the opportunity to study for a nationally recognised qualification on weekday mornings and to train with the Football Academy squad every day. On a daily basis, a student spends 2 or 3 hours in the classroom and 2 hours training/playing in matches across the county.

We have had many outstanding performances on the field winning high level competitions on numerous occasions both in the ECFA British College’s League (most recently league champions in 2023), ESFA Super League National Semi Finalists (2023) and in the USA (recent double champions 2022).

Every year we provide numerous players for the Staffordshire County Schools FA U18 team, as well as the England Schoolboys u18 trials, with several making the final national team over our 15 year history.

Our Football Academy has gone from strength to strength, evolving annually to further build on our sustained success and remain at the forefront of Post 16 football programmes nationally. We have multiple teams on a Wednesday afternoon and they all compete in a variety of competitions including;

  • ECFA British Colleges Football League Midlands Championship & Regional Leagues
  • AOC National Cup competitions (ECFA)
  • Shropshire Schools U19 Football League
  • Staffordshire School’s U18 County Cup
  • English School’s FA U18 Super League (National Cup)
  • Needham Memorial Day Tournament (Boston, USA)

Additional qualifications that students can complete include:

  • Sports Coaching awards (FA Level 1 support sessions)
  • FA First Aid
  • FA Safeguarding
  • FA Talent Identification Level 1
  • FA Futsal
  • Personal Training L1 & L2
  • FA Referee Award

Individually, the students will be monitored and mentored closely, with a large emphasis being placed on their academic achievement, and receiving sound careers advice. Since 2009, a high volume of students have graduated with D*D*D* grades (equivalent to 3 A* at A Level) making it one of the leading academic courses in the UK. During the course we invite many universities in as guest speakers in order to promote their courses to our students, as well as opportunities to visit local university campuses for events and taster days.

Completion of the 2 year qualification results in further career and learning opportunities such as;

  • UK University Pathway – BSc & BA (Hons) in a wide variety of sports related degrees across the country
  • A 4 year Football Scholarship Pathway at university in the USA
  • Full time employment in the sport or leisure industry
  • Sports apprenticeships in coaching and development roles
