In 2009, Codsall Community High School opened the first school based Football Academy in the UK.
Football Academy students follow the BTEC National Extended Diploma in Sport (equivalent to 3 A-Levels). The two-year course for 16-19 year olds is followed in 6th Form and provides students with the opportunity to study for a nationally recognised qualification on weekday mornings and to train with the Football Academy squad every day. On a daily basis, a student spends 2 or 3 hours in the classroom and 2 hours training.
Our Football Academy has gone from strength to strength in terms of students on roll, totalling over ninety in 2017. We have four teams on a Wednesday afternoon and they compete in a variety of competitions including;
British Colleges Football League
Shropshire Schools Football League
Staffordshire School’s FA Cup
English School’s National Cup
Needham Memorial Day Tournament (Boston, USA)
Additional qualifications that students complete include:
Sports Coaching (UEFA L1 and L2) and Officiating awards
Individually, the students will be monitored and mentored closely, with a large emphasis being placed on their academic achievement, and receiving sound careers advice. Since 2009, 95% of students have graduated with 3 A* grades making it one of the leading academic courses in the UK. During the course we invite many universities in as guest speakers in order to promote their courses to our students.
Completion of the 2 year Diploma results in further career and learning opportunities such as;
* A 4 year football scholarship at university in the USA
* Enrolment onto a sports related degree course at a UK university
* Full time employement in the sport or leisure industry
