In Autumn 2021, the Department for Education released information to schools concerning the awarding of qualifications for GCSE, A-level, BTEC and similar qualifications in the summer 2022 exam session. A summary of that information is presented here and this webpage will be updated with new information as it is released, including subject-specific notifications.
The Government intends that GCSE, A-level and BTEC qualifications will go ahead in as close a fashion as possible to ‘normal’, with nationally-set exams for all relevant qualifications.
The Government also provided details to schools outlining how they conduct practical work in GCSE and A-level sciences.
The Government expects that grades will be awarded based on students’ performance in public examinations, as would usually be the case for qualifications. Non-examination assessment (NEA) components will count in the usual fashion. The Government intends that the grade boundaries that will be applied to 2022 grades will ensure there is a return to more normal proportions of students achieving each grade in 2022 and 2023 compared to the higher proportion of students achieving top grades seen nationally in 2020 and 2021.
The Department for Education has stated that whilst it is their firm intention to run examinations in the summer of 2022, they will maintain the option of using a form of Teacher Assessed Grades as a contingency should the national lockdown situation dictate that examinations cannot go ahead as normal.
Results will be released in August: 18th August for KS5 (level 3) qualifications and 25th August for KS4 (level 2) qualifications.
As relevant material is released, we will publish pertinent details for each subject below.
